About the program
About J1 visa programs
The United States introduced the J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa Program in 1961 under the Fullbright-Hays 1961 to strengthen relations between the US and other countries and give people training and experience in the U.S. that they can use to benefit their home countries.
Though the J1 Program started out by bringing scholars into the United States for a specific educational objective such as teaching and conducting research, the program extended into other exchange categories that share the same cultural exchange objective:
- Au Pair (domestic assistant exchange)
- Government Visitor (cultural exchange program for representatives of foreign governments)
- Professor & Research or Short-Term Scholar (cultural exchange program in US colleges and universities)
- Work and Travel (summer holiday work program for foreign students)
- and the J1 Training and Internship Program (career training program for foreign students and recent graduates)

IIUSA works with 2 types of J-1 programs: J-1 Internship and J-1 Training. To learn the difference between the two, please take a look at this infographic. IIUSA also assists international students and foreign graduates of US-based universities to find OPT training positions in the United States.

International Student Interns
Aside from J1 interns and trainees, we also work with international students who are pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees in the United States. Talented, fluent in English and multilingual, these students have long been valuable assets to US businesses. Plus, they are already in the country ready and eager to start an internship with your company and grow your business.
